Changes in habits, lifestyle and attitudes are often the first indication that there is something seriously wrong.
Extreme
changes in lifestyle are a
sign of drug addiction. Addicts
can exhibit this by showing an acute need for privacy along with paranoia or
secretive behavior. The dependant
individual will become closed to friends and family – physically and mentally
shutting out the people who care most.
Drug
addicts become very secretive and suspicious of family and friends, even when
the user’s family and friends are the only people trying to help. The addict won’t admit to using excessive
amounts of drugs, yet will be gone unaccountably for long periods of time and
won’t answer when asked questions regarding whereabouts – or will lie. Such questions only illicit anger and a
complete rejection of the attempted help.
The
addict will steal from the ones closest to him or her in order to buy more
drugs, but when confronted will lie or refuse to tell the family member or
friend where the money went.
The
cause of the above changes is: a drug addict must hide his or her addiction. The
addict knows his behavior is destructive and is trying to protect family and
friends from the effects of their addiction.
In an attempt to hide addictive behaviors, the user tends to go into seclusion,
even in the midst of friends. This is
the basis for behavior that upsets friends and family of the drug addict.
The
Narconon program is specially designed to strengthen the bonds between the
addict and those who seek to help by enabling them to live with the truth and
no longer feel the urge to hide.
