Halcion
contains triazolam, a triazozobenzodiazepine hypnotic agent. Triazolam is a central nervous system
depressant and is usually prescribed as a sedative. Trade names for triazolam include: Halcion,
Novodorm and Songar.
Halcion
is classified as a schedule IV narcotic by the DEA. This means that it has a low potential for
abuse and is available with a prescription.
Halcion
was withdrawn on a temporary basis from markets in several countries because of
concerns about serious (mostly psychological) side effects associated with high
dosages of the drug. Halcion is still
banned in the UK
after the Committee on the Safety of Medicines concluded that it caused a
higher frequency of psychological side-effects than other hypnotic agencies.
Halcion Side Effects
Halcion
can cause very serious side effects such as: allergies, rash, mania, delusions,
violence, constipation, rapid heart beat, ringing ears, memory impairment, lack
of coordination, anorexia, fatigue, jaundice, problems urinating, confusion,
dysarthria or addiction.
Other
side effects include: headache, nausea, changes in libido, menstrual irregularities,
depression, drowsiness, light-headed feeling, vomiting, sleep deprivation,
twitches, irrational behavior, heart burn, chest pain, burning tongue,
diarrhea, dry mouth, nightmares, congestion, euphoria or cramps.
Death has
been reported as a side effect in users taking Halcion with diuretic drugs.
Signs of Overdose
Overdose
of Halcion can cause death. If one
suspects overdose, seek medical attention right away. Overdose symptoms include: lethargy,
confusion, impaired coordination, coma, respiratory depression, apnea or
seizures.
Withdrawal Symptoms
Long term
use of Halcion – or indeed any benzodiazepine - usually leads to tolerance and
dependence with the appearance of withdrawal symptoms when one decides to lower
dosage or end use.
Withdrawal
from Halcion can cause very severe reactions such as: convulsions, tremor,
abdominal cramps, muscle cramps, vomiting, nausea, sweating, diarrhea,
hallucination, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, confusion, suicidal thoughts or
toxic psychosis.
Getting
off Halcion can be a daunting process.
